It is no secret that I am a huge Vonnegut fan. One of my favorite novels of all time is, Slaughterhouse Five. However, Breakfast of Champions, brings Vonnegut to a whole new level. It is truly "him." It is a tribute to himself for his 50th birthday and full of his wonderful black humor and satire. The novel is a combination of two characters lives that are intertwined and come together in the end, with Vonnegut himself, the Creator of the "Universe" moving them around like puppets. It's full of drawings, political issues, and history that are all of great importance. To me, every page, every word, every letter of Vonnegut's writing is important. Kind of like one of the main characters, Dwayne Hoover, thinks every word of Kilgore Trout's writing is important to him. Dwayne Hoover starts out as your normal guy and suddenly turns a little cuckoo and is lost in the universe. Lucky for him Kilgore Trout is slowly making his way to the town in which Dwayne lives in to "show" him what this universe is all about with his very sci-fi view of how it all works. Lets just say the end, when they merge lives, is very chaotic and entertaining.
