Not only do I like to dress for the location but for the occasion, as well. Our Saturday in Des Moines from a couple weekends ago made it a bit of a challenge for me with the rain and having to transition from exploring mode to night out on the town mode, but I think I made it work fairly well!

A couple of weekends ago we took a short road trip out to Des Moines, IA for a friend's bridal shower and to spend one last weekend in Des Moines with my best friend since she is moving to Portland in a couple weeks! We drove out on Saturday and came back on Sunday, but we sure did pack a lot of things in to our short 24 hour trip. So stay tuned for some upcoming DSM posts and a city guide release! As for what I packed for our short little trip, it was the lightest my weekender bag has ever been. It was really nice to not have my shoulder killing me for once.

After all the wedding festivities last weekend, Caleb and I made a quick stop at the John Deere Pavilion. It was somewhat small but the exhibits were quite mighty!
The Pavilion was full of all different kinds of John Deere equipment. The shear size of all of them is incredible. The Model A Tractor was the first John Deere tractor styled by Henry Dryfus. The wheels were huge and even though it's old, it got the job done.

This S670 combine is ridiculously huge. It's used for harvesting crops and can hold up to 300 bushels at a time. It takes about 94 seconds to unload. That's so efficient, it blows my mind!
Farming equipment has come such a long way and is so important to the American culture. These are the machines that help feed us. Literally. John Deere is such an innovator when it comes to the farming community and it's amazing that he started from nothing. The John Deere Pavilion is small but that makes it easy to get through. It's full of interesting facts and is very kid friendly. You can climb inside almost all the equipment! If you're ever in the Quad Cities, this little gem is definitely worth your time! My favorite was the little turbo lawn mower. It literally mows your lawn by itself and then just returns to its docking station to charge. I would totally just sit out in a lawn chair, drink a marg, read a book, and let it do its thing. Caleb says no though because he needs our future lawn to have perfect diagonal lines ;)
Have you ever visited the John Deere Pavilion? If so, what was your favorite part?
Check out our Flickr account for more pictures from the Pavilion! There's a few funny pictures of me in the Quad Cities album...
This past weekend I had the honor of heading out to the Quad Cities for one of my dearest friends' wedding! I got to partake in all the wedding festivities and be a part of their awesome bridal party. We were blessed with beautiful weather this weekend in Iowa, so with that plus the structure of the weekend made packing quite simple!

We escaped the cold this past weekend and hung out in some 70 degree weather...in Chicago! We went to the Garfield Park Conservatory and it was perfect for my mindset of "force spring to happen."
My best friend Ashlyn came out for a short visit, and we decided to explore somewhere new! So we trekked out to Garfield Park and enjoyed the warmth of the conservatory. We absolutely loved it. It literally made us so happy to be in a warm and bright place full of so much life. We walked around for about an hour or so and it was the perfect weekend "getaway."
Outfit details:
Sweater (old - similar) - Gap //Jeans - JCrew // Grey booties (old - similar) - DSW // Sunglasses - Dollar Store // Necklace (old - similar) - Francesca's PS - I gave up shopping for Lent so please forgive the old but similar comment that you're going to be seeing on most outfits. I have to be creative with my old clothes, and I will try my best to find a similar style and priced item at the original place I got my piece from for all of you!
I'm not sure I can say the best part about the conservatory because I really think the warmth was the best part, but an awesome thing about it is that it's free! They accept donations to help keep the place running and beautiful though. Parking is also free there! The best advice I can give if you decide to drive is to leave your coat in the car and deal with the cold for the 2 minutes you have to walk from your car to the conservatory. You definitely won't need it inside and it was a pain to carry it around in there.
The conservatory has many different rooms and they all have different kinds of plants. We went to 7 of them because some of them were under construction. My favorite was the Show Room, which had a spectacular display of flowers. All the colors brought me so much happiness and the hope that spring will be here rather soon! I really loved how educational everything was, too. They had very simple facts that you could quickly glance over and have those "huh I didn't know that" moments.
I really loved that it was sunny when we went too and that I could wear my sunglasses! It felt like we were walking around in Florida.
The Garfield Park Conservatory has been added to the Chicago city guide along with a couple other places we discovered this past weekend! So make sure you check it out for your next trip to Chicago or if you are Chicago based and need some new recommendations!

On our last full day in San Fransisco, Caleb and I spent the day in jail. Okay not actually locked up in jail, but we spent a few hours exploring Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. Alcatraz is run by the National Parks Service after it was officially shut down as a prison in 1963. It was seriously one of the coolest things I've ever experienced. It was creepy, interesting, shocking, sad, etc.
In 1969 the island was occupied for over a year by Native Americans and they left messages like the one on the water tower and the front all around the island. As you can see from the workers' quarters the man made buildings are seriously deteriorating. This was the main reason the prison shut down. It was too hard to continue on with the up keep.
We took the self guided tour that they provide with headphones. At first we weren't going to do it because it takes about an hour to get through, but we were both so glad we decided to listen and follow along. We learned so much and it made the visit so much more interesting and enjoyable. If you visit Alcatraz, DO NOT pass this up.
Outfit details:
Dress (similar) - Banana Republic // Sandals (similar) - Target // Fedora - Target // Jacket (similar) - JCrew // Longchamp Large Le Pilage - Nordstrom // Sunglasses - Warby Parker
To get to and from the island we took the Alcatraz Boat Cruise. It's the only way to get out to the island and it's $30 a person. It really is worth the trip though. It is such a huge piece of American history and a great way to get your history fix in San Francisco if you're a history nerd like me! Plus it offers great views of the island itself and the San Fransisco skyline.
INTERESTING FACT: The very famous Al Capone was brought there in 1934. In order to ensure that none of this pals could devise a plan to help him escape, they transported the train car that Capone was on on to a ferry and brought him out to Alcatraz!
The main cell house...disgusting right?
As you can see from the many many pictures we took, it was a very interesting part of our trip. We thoroughly enjoyed walking around the island and the guided tour. The island is extremely windy though! So my fedora was not the best idea when we were outside.

As you know from my Winter Weekend Packing for Des Moines post from a couple of days ago, I spent the weekend in Iowa a couple weekends ago! I went for a long weekend to visit my best friend [Ashlyn] and help another great friend [Jackie] with some wedding planning. I'm going to be heading out to Iowa a few more times in the upcoming months which is really exciting because I consider it my home away from home.
Last weekend I drove out to Des Moines for a long weekend to visit my best friend and help another great friend with some wedding plans! It was a short but fun trip with decent weather for it being February in Iowa. The toughest part was the jacket situation, but since I drove I was able to leave any extra jackets I wasn't wearing in my car. Other than that, the outfit planning was quite easy and efficient!
Day 1 // Drive & Dinner
On a gorgeous Sunday afternoon while we were in San Francisco, we strolled along The Embarcadero. The Embaracdero goes along the San Francisco Bay and is San Francisco's Lake Shore Drive (for all my Chicago readers). There are tons of piers for both business and pleasure and the view is extraordinary!
We started our first full day out in San Francisco at this beauty! We tackled The Presido and walking the Golden Gate bridge bright and early. In my opinion it was the best time to go because it was nice and cool out plus we got to see the fog slowly burn off.
