Better late than never right!? A couple weekends ago, Caleb and I were out in Ohio for my cousin's wedding and decided we would do some exploring of a city that is "disappearing" before our eyes, Detroit. Now you may be asking, what's in Detroit? Well stay tuned because you're about to find out!

Detroit use to be booming. It use to be one of the most exciting places in America. Now people ask, what could you possibly want to go to Detroit for? Well, the people that still call Detroit their home are incredibly humble and nice, there is so much rich history still there, and there are some hidden gems. We made a random stop on our way up to Detroit at a little town called Luna Pier. Yes, I am that person that if you take a road trip with me I will want to stop and look at the world's biggest rubber band ball. So, we got off of the highway and drove in to this quiet little town to see Lake Erie! It was so peaceful and beautiful. Taking in the fresh air and scenery was the perfect way to start out our adventure!
Our next stop was downtown Detroit. We wanted to get there and get our bearings, snap a few photos, and just walk around. It was quiet and you could really see how much of a ghost town Detroit has turned in to. We picked a place to park got to see the Fort Street Presbyterian Church, which was so beautiful, as well as Joe Louis Arena. Now I know you're all thinking "EWWWWW" and I know, but lets look at it on the bright side...that's where the magic happens of the Blackhawks KILLING the Red Wings ;)

We then made our way to Mexicantown to Duly's Place. This little Coney Island style restaurant/diner/hot dog shop? whatever you want to call it, was featured on Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown: Detroit show. It really is as good as he says. We all know how I am about hot dogs, and this place was AWESOME. I got a hot dog with mustard and Caleb got a hamburger and a chilli dog. My hot dog was good, but I should have been more adventurous and got the chilli dog because I had a bite of Caleb's and it was delicious! Definitely a hidden gem.

The majority of our day was spent at you guessed it, a museum. We picked the Henry Ford Museum to explore for a good portion of the day, and it has probably some of the coolest things I've ever seen in my entire life. We got to see President John F. Kennedy's car that he was shot in, a 1931 Bugatti Type 41 Royale (there were only 6 ever made), planes, the bus that Rosa Parks sat in and wouldn't give up her seat, the only Dymaxion House ever built, and so much more. I'm clearly a huge history nerd, so being able to sit in Rosa Parks' seat on that bus was probably one of the coolest things I've ever done in my entire life. This museum is out of this world amazing, and I highly recommend it to everyone and anyone.
After the museum we made our way back to downtown Detroit for the GM River Days on the Detroit RiverWalk. It was a whopping $3 to get in and we got to have some awesome carnival food, walk along the Detroit River, and see Canada! One of the coolest parts was getting to walk through the Phillip A. Hart Plaza. Detroit has some pretty cool art pieces and architecture.
We then made the long trek back to Chicago, but definitely with full hearts and a lot of love for the city of Detroit. We're looking forward to making many day trips out there when we head back east to see my family! Stick around Detroit because you're AWESOME!
