Long time no book talk! For those of you that are newer to this little corner of the internet might not know that on top of travel, I also love to post about books that I'm reading. Well, I finally finished Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, so let's chat! Even though it took me a really really really long time to finish this novel, it was wonderful. The length of time it took me to read it is no reflection on it's story or quality. Great Expectations takes place in 19th century England and is about a boy name Pip and his great expectations. Ha see what Dickens did there? Pip is raised by his sister and brother-in-law in a rather poor house and they do the best they can. As Pip begins to grow up, he inherits a great fortune from an unknown person and is sent off to become a gentleman. He goes through many ups and downs, but in my opinion |
does turn out to be a true gentleman.
I thought all the characters were all so well thought out and that they all added something special to the story. The way Dickens wrote it to really made you feel the context that was going on. When Pip was around more proper folks, you could feel it. When Pip was with his brother-in-law Joe, you would feel more comfortable and relaxed. To me, feeling is everything. You might not remember exactly how something goes, but you'll remember how you felt about it. Great Expectations made me feel excitement, sympathy, relief, etc. I highly recommend this large, long read because it is completely worth it in the end. Work your way slowly through it like I did, and you'll come out of it glad that you did. So ask I always like to say, "read it! I know you'll love it!
UP NEXT: The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith
