A big and exciting event happens every year here in the good ole Midwest right after Independence Day and goes all the way till right after Labor Day. The Renaissance Faire! This faire is huge and fun and the people that go get really really in to it. Now there is a lot to do and see at the Ren Faire but if you're going for the first time then there are some must see/do's that you need to add and check off your list!
1. Watch a mud fight
Don't worry it's not a fist fight or anything. It's a cheesy battle that happens in a mud pit. But it's so hilarious. The jokes are really raunchy though, so heads up for any parents with kids. They might just go right over their heads though and if that's a case then it's a win win! Dirty jokes for you and funny action for the kids.
2. Shop the little shops
There are 100's of cool shops at the Ren Faire. You can get just about anything you can imagine. High on my want list that I refrained from was a Buddha gnome and a calf skin rug. Both out of my price range but so dang cool. (Major FYI: I am not a big fur or animal skin person, and I'm clueless as to why I was so drawn to the calf skin, but it was seriously so beautiful and the softest thing in the world. I couldn't pull the trigger though...so take that as you may). However, I did buy a beautiful beaded bracelet that I wear all the time and a hand drawn Marauder's Map. Just walk around and you'll find some real gems, too!
3. Eat a turkey leg
They may be 1500 calories but you better eat one! Maybe share it with your significant other and kids? Either way, it's a classic Ren Faire eat and you need to try it because it's so dang delicious!
4. Catch a show
Grab a Stage Schedule on your way in or check online before you get there to pick a show or two to watch while you are there. We saw a joust tournament and an acrobatic show while we were there. Both were so entertaining! When we were watching the jousting, I really felt like I was in Knights Tale, jokes and all.
5. The pub crawl
The best bang for your buck if you want to get stupid drunk at the Ren Faire is to buy a pub crawl ticket. They are $35 and get you a drink at all the "pubs" at the faire. It's well worth it considering one beer is $6+. Plus what's better than drinking with all your best lads and ladies in the 1500's?
The faire is open every Saturday and Sunday + Labor Day. Tickets to get in are $23.95 for adults and $11.50 for kids. You can purchase tickets at a local Walgreens as well for a discounted price. The fair is located on the Illinois/Wisconsin border in Bristol, WI. There are other Ren Faires in the USA located in Southern California and New York.
