We're going to travel back in time today about 2 months. OR we can just pretend this trip happened last weekend? Whichever you prefer! Anyways, back in May, we went out to Des Moines again for the most wonderful wedding and had loads of fun exploring more of this awesome midwestern city! Our first stop when we got there, a Mexican restaurant for some lunch.
Food + Drink - A+ |
The food at Malo was fantastic. They really started off on the right foot when they brought out chips and salsa to us. Chips and salsa are high on my list of favorite foods. The salsa was the perfect amount of spicy, and the chips were the perfect amount of sturdy and salty. Nothing worse than a filmsy, stale, non-salted tortilla chip if you ask me. For drinks, I ordered the roja sangria, and Caleb ordered the whiskey smash. We both loved our picks and thought they were the perfect unwinding tool after a long drive from Chicago to Des Moines. For our entrees, I ordered the chicken enchilada with drunk beans, and Caleb ordered the big 'ol burrito with jalapeno cream corn. My enchilada was incredible and Caleb's burrito was also delicious and huge! My favorite thing out of everything though was Caleb's jalapeno cream corn. It was creamy and spicy and pure goodness. |
Ambience + Atmosphere - A+ |
The restaurant itself looked pretty big, but we opted to sit out on the patio. Patio eating and drinking is my favorite activity of all time. I just love it. Their patio area was the cutest, too! They had strands of lights that I'm sure would make the ambience perfect at night time for a fun date night. The tables and chairs were comfy for outdoor seating. It was also a nice relaxed atmosphere, which we were in desperate need of after our long drive. |
Location + Transportation - A+ |
Malo is located in downtown Des Moines. It's walking difference from tons of other places and is a great spot for having a bite to eat and then moving on to drinks at another establishment. As far as transportation goes, we drove our car there and were able to find street parking right across the street. I believe we only fed the meter $1 to park for an hour. |
Extras + Details - A+ |
The service at Malo was outstanding. Our waitress was so attentive to us and very friendly. We made reservations for lunch this time around because we were on a tight schedule the rest of the day and didn't have time to wait for a table if there was a lunch crowd. However, the place was not very busy around 1 PM when we arrived for lunch. I do suggest reservations for dinner though, as I know this is a very popular place in DSM. |
Overall Impression - A+ |
Overall, we loved Malo and will recommend it to everyone and anyone in Des Moines. If you are looking for good Mexican food in a nice restaurant...go to Malo! |
