One of the highlights of Des Moines is the Science Center of Iowa. It is a great place to take the kiddos for a day of fun and learning. Have no fear all you adults though, it's actually pretty fun for us, too!
The Science Center of Iowa isn't the biggest science museum out there, but it's quality. They have some interesting exhibits that include an animal exhibit featuring reptiles, science "toys" aka how to make a paper airplane (and you can test how far it will fly!), explore the human body with a large sculpture doll, and some cool chemistry experiments. My favorite by far was the reptiles. They look so life like and come with a lot of interesting facts.
The Science Center also has an attached IMAX theater! We we're lucky enough to catch the Island of Lemurs: Madagascar film. The IMAX experience made the film incredible. It was only 45 minutes long, but completely worth our time. We learned a lot of about the habitat of lemurs, how they are endangered, and got to see a lot of really cool scenery from Madagascar. The theater has 5 other films showing right now, too and I want to see all of them! The current films are:
- Interstellar
- Living in the Age of Airplanes
- Journey to Space
- Great White Shark
- Islands of Lemurs: Madagascar
- Mysteries of the Unseen World
Our airplane didn't fly very far...but we sure did have a fun time toying with science! << See what I did there? The Science Center of Iowa is a Des Moines staple and deserves of a visit while you're out exploring Des Moines.
