Caleb and I just love exploring the museums in Chicago. The Field Museum in particular. It is our favorite museum in Chicago and we find ourselves there a few times a year to see the new exhibits and revisit some of our favorite permanent ones.
With it being a bit chilly in Chicago this past weekend, we figured we would spend our Sunday afternoon saying hi to Sue (the big T-Rex) and see a couple exhibits we hadn't seen before. As I like to call it, museuming, is the perfect Chicago activity for a rainy/dreary day in the summer. The Africa exhibit is a permanent one at the Field, but Caleb and I had never gone through it. The continent is so big and diverse that it made for some great browsing and learning.
Elephants are very special in Africa. A lot of communities consider them to be sacred. Chiefs use to hire royal artists to carve the tusks to tell a story. The one on display at the Field Museum was for the story of Erebo of South Africa. The carvings are unbelievable and you can tell that they tell a story of his successes. Elephants are my favorite animal, so all of this was incredibly fascinating to me!
Our special exhibit for the day though was going to see Galapagos 3D. It was a short 25 minute 3D film about a lot of different animal species on the Galapagos Islands. The film explained how all these animals ended up on such a remote island that appeared relatively not that long ago on Earth. We also learned how a lot of these species have evolved and how they survive on these islands today. We got to see birds, tortoises, and iguanas all popping out of the screen!
The main special exhibits at the Field Museum currently are the Vikings and Mammoth exhibits. Let me know if you've been and if we should check them out before they leave Chicago!
