One of the things on our travel bucket list is to visit all the state capitals in the US. It's a great way to get to all 50 states and see some incredible architecture! We figured we would start the list with our own state's capital, Springfield!
(Yes, we have been to Des Moines, IA many times, but we've never been inside the capitol building itself, so we are not counting Des Moines just yet.)

There are some must do's while you're in Springfield and number 1 is to tour the Capitol Building. It's very impressive inside and out, and the tour is free! The tour takes about 30-45 minutes and you get an inside look in to everywhere! We got to see the Governor's office, the House of Representative chambers, the Senate's chambers, statues, an incredible painting, and also learn so much about Illinois' history.
Some other must do's while you're in Springfield are:
1. Visit the Old Capitol Building
2. Peek inside the Lincoln Memorial Library
3. Explore theLincoln Museum
4. Shop the little stores in downtown Springfield
5. Pay your respects at the Lincoln Tomb
6. Eat a horseshoe at D'Acry's Pint

As you can tell, Illinois is very "Lincoln." We are known as the Land of Lincoln, actually. Lincoln grew up in Illinois and we truly pride ourselves on "raising" one of the best presidents of the United States who changed the course of history in our country.
On our day in Springfield, we were lucky enough to stumble upon a Civil War reenactment. One of the events was a mock press conference with Abraham Lincoln. This was not a common thing to do back in the 1800's, but Lincoln felt it necessary to address the press and give insight in to how the war was turning around in favor of the Union. I have a strong feeling these type of events are common down in Springfield, as every one we saw in the area was dressed for the occasion and really knew their stuff! So definitely be on the lookout!
