I am going to apologize before I even start at how negative this might sound. Therefore, if you are a fan of this book and are someone who gets offended by negative reviews of books you love then I suggest you stop reading.
My entire thought process throughout this book was, what is the point of this story? I kept reading on and on, waiting and hoping it would get better, but it never did. I'm sorry, but My Ántonia by Willa Cather was just down right boring. I'm a huge lover of the classics, but this one was "tough." Not tough in the sense that the syntax was complex or anything, no, it was probably the slowest story I've ever read.
The plot is the life story of a boy who writes about a girl who influences his life. You might think, "oh that sounds sweet!" But no. Nothing happens in the entire story. There are some ups and downs but nothing of real excitement. There's no love story, it's not inspiring, and it just wasn't interesting. I think the main point of the story is to show how hard work means more than anything else in life, but like I said, I wasn't inspired by it. It didn't make me want to work harder at my life, it just made me want to be done with the novel. The majority of the story takes place in Nebraska and the visuals that are given are well, no offense, of Nebraska...
If you're like me and want to tackle as many classics as possible, go for it. However, if you're one to not waste your time with a book, then I would say don't read it. It is honestly just a book I can mark off my list now. It took me a month to read it...and it was less than 300 pages. It was a real struggle. On a happier note though, the next book I'm reading should be real happy and put a smile on all of our faces because it is...
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling
*I once again want to apologize for the negative post. It is not like me to not love a book or post a negative post on this happy blog. However, as promised from my previous Book Club post, I wanted to keep my word on writing the review for the book that I said I would be reading next. Keep smiling...there are way more good books out there than bad :)
